References on a Swiss CV: a complete guide

Introduction

In Switzerland, references are taken very seriously. Here is how to manage them effectively.

The Swiss employment certificate

A mandatory document

Every employer must provide an employment certificate (Arbeitszeugnis) at the end of the contract.

Types of certificates

Full certificate (qualified)

  • Description of duties
  • Performance evaluation
  • Behavioral evaluation
  • Recommendations

Certificate of employment (simple)

  • Employment dates
  • Position held
  • No evaluation

Reading between the lines

The Swiss certificate uses a coded language:

  • "to our full satisfaction" = very good
  • "to our satisfaction" = average
  • "made efforts" = unsatisfactory

References on the CV

Should you mention them?

On the CV: No, not necessary.
Write instead: "References available upon request"

When to provide them: When the recruiter asks (usually at the end of the process).

How many references?

Generally 2-3 people:

  • Recent direct supervisor
  • Former manager
  • Colleague or partner (if relevant)

Choosing your references

Good references

  • Direct managers
  • Mentors
  • Satisfied clients
  • Project partners

To avoid

  • Family or friends
  • Same-level colleagues (with exceptions)
  • Managers with whom you had conflicts

Preparing your references

Before providing them

  1. Ask for permission
  2. Brief them on the position you are targeting
  3. Remind them of your key achievements
  4. Provide them with your updated CV

Information to share

  • Full name
  • Current title
  • Company
  • Direct phone number
  • Professional email
  • Relationship with you

Reference checks in Switzerland

What is verified

  • Employment dates
  • Title and responsibilities
  • Overall performance
  • Reason for departure
  • Would they rehire you?

Your rights

  • You can request the references before verification
  • You have a right of access to the information

Negative employment certificates

What to do?

  1. Request factual corrections
  2. Negotiate an interim certificate
  3. As a last resort: legal action

Prevention

Ask for regular feedback to avoid surprises.

Conclusion

Manage your references proactively. They can make the difference in a close application process.
